The Great Crocodile River Safari

Ancient Beasts

Sri Lanka is home to two types of crocodile species; the Marsh Crocodile (Genus - Crocodylus, Family - Crocodylidae) also know as Mugger Crocodile is a Freshwater Crocodilian that is found across Southern Asia, the other being the Saltwater Crocodile (Crocodylus porosus), alternatively called the Estuarine Crocodile. The Mugger Crocodile inhabits a variety of Freshwater Habitats, including natural lakes, man-made reservoirs, rivers and tributary rivers, freshwater swamp forests and lowland wet zone marshlands. The saltwater crocodile on the other hand thrives near river mouths, lagoons and canals that are near the coastal belt.

CrocodileQuest

Today we set off on an adventure by boat to spot these giant beasts in the Nilwala River in Matara. The Nilwala is one of the key rivers in Sri Lanka and originates from the Sinharajah rainforest. We start off near the river mouth and start heading inlands passing through coastal marshlands and vegetation. Keep your eyes peeled and your cameras at the ready as these green beasts of the river are quite tricky to spot at a glance.
