The big hotel openings of 2023
The Dilmah Ceylon Tea Company first ventured into hospitality in 2005 when it launched Resplendent, the company behind Ceylon Tea Trails and Cape Weligama. It’s now created another brand, Reverie, which has three openings in prospect. The first two are on the south coast: Ahu Bay stands on Ahungalla Point between two sandy coves from which it’s safe to swim (not a given in Sri Lanka) and has four ocean-facing suites and three three-bedroom beach villas; while Kayaam House, near Tangalle, has eight rooms and more of an emphasis on yoga, wellness, birdwatching and kayaking, thanks to its proximity to the Rekawa Lagoon. A third property, Kelburne Estate, is expected at the end of the year, a string of cottages amid the tea plantations of Haputale, 1,500 metres up in the southern hill country.
February 1; Ahu from $450; Kayaam from $700 including all meals, a daily spa treatment and yoga.

New hotels to inspire future travels
Sri Lanka is set to welcome a new collection of boutique properties from Reverie – a brand that comes from the team behind the country’s renowned luxury hotel resorts, Resplendent Ceylon. The first two will be located on the golden-sand south coast: Kayaam House in Tangalle and Ahu Bay in Ahungalla. These secluded sanctuaries comprise laid-back beach houses, with accommodation boasting ocean rooms, suites and villas, and a focus on relaxing, restorative experiences. At Ahu Bay, expect beautifully manicured gardens, a spa and an infinity swimming pool, while Kayaam House offers spa therapies based on traditional healing methods and hyper-local ingredients.

From the minds behind Sri Lanka’s Resplendent Ceylon, Reverie is a collection of boutique properties that embrace the island’s slow pace of life. It will launch with the opening of two properties along the south coast: Kayaam House in Tangalle and Ahu Bay in Ahungalla.
Two new properties are coming to Sri Lanka this February, under the new Reverie umbrella from Sri Lanka’s leading luxury hotel collection, Resplendent Ceylon. Both situated on the south coast, find Kayaam House in Tangalle, home to six Ocean Rooms and two Palm Suites, all just steps from the ocean. Ahu Bay, however, will be in Ahungalla, where four suites and three three-bedroom villas will feature sandy tones, rattan furniture, recycled wood accents and plenty of natural greenery.
Sharing Resplendent’s core values, and set to appeal to the same discerning crowd, Reverie focuses on smaller properties, and respectful immersion in Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage. Each one is a home-from-home, offering a harmonious balance between connectivity and seclusion, with digital detox zones, and no set times for meals or activities. A refuge for switching off and tending to inner wellbeing, Reverie encourages guests to, “slow down, be mindful, and embrace a simpler version of life, surrounded by nature and harmony,” says Managing Director, Malik J. Fernando.
Expertly curated by the local team, each of Reverie’s properties will offer soulful experience menus that offer guests the chance to completely, mindfully and respectfully immerse themselves in Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage.
The Reverie resorts are ideal for larger buyouts, milestone celebrations and long weekend getaways. With nine rooms at Kayaam House and Sixteen at Ahu Bay, these are well-suited for this specific market. Both properties can also be accessed via the Southern expressway, making the transfers seamless.
Sri Lanka’s luxury Reverie collection launches this February with two gorgeous sister hotels on the south coast. Kayaam House in Tangalle is an eight-room beach bolthole, and Ahu Bay has four rooms and three villas shrouded in tropical greenery on a sandy cove.
Both have pools, restaurants serving Sri Lankan cuisine, and spas offering treatments based on traditional methods.
Conde Nast Traveller – Kayaam House
There are eight rooms spread across the house. Each is stripped back but sophisticated, allowing the high-ceilinged space to speak for itself with super comfy wooden beds, teak furniture and earthy textures. There’s calming abstract art designed to keep you in the zen mood and Bang and Olufsen tech. The floor-to-ceiling windows slide open to reveal magnificent views of either the tropical jungle canopy or a flashing seascape. Ask for a room on the upper floor for the best vista and a bathtub on the terrace. Couples will love the Palm Suite with its outdoor jacuzzi. The Palm Residence, slightly set apart from the house, is the cream of the crop, with a private garden and jacuzzi.
Conde Nast Traveller – Ahu Bay
There are four bedrooms in the main house plus three three-bedroom villas (available either by room or exclusive basis). The interiors are a collage of colour, texture and fun. Elegant wood kingsize beds sit alongside sophisticated teak furniture, textiles brought back from India and rattan lighting. Large evocative photographs of stilt fishermen, who you can still spot along the coast, decorate the wall. The bright blue hand-crafted tiled bathrooms – some open-air – have marble top sinks and another-level rain showers. The rooms in the main house showcase phenomenal sea views from their terraces. But splash out on the Pool Villa with its rope-swinging chair in the living room and sunny terrace, surrounded by tropical gardens, with a private pool, big enough to do laps in.
