We think it’s fair to say that we absolutely love to travel and there are a couple of things we’d typically carry with us along the way. Whether it’s heading to one of the resorts, or a circuit across all three, here’s what we’d list as our road trip essentials.

We believe in planning ahead, just to make sure nothing is missed out. Firstly, make a list of what you need to pack. Once the larger luggage is sorted, let’s focus on the smaller essentials. Be sure to have your wallet (that includes all your personal IDs, cards and some cash), passport if necessary and health insurance. Regardless of your mode of transport, always carry a reusable water bottle with you. Staying hydrated during a road trip is important. Insulated bottles will ensure the water stays as cool as you like. An alternate bottle for our hot brew of tea or coffee wouldn’t be such a bad idea either.

We Sri Lankans love our snacks so there may be some of you who love to go all out and stock up on your favourite treats. Having them in smaller airtight containers or bags keeps them fresh for a long period of time regardless of whether you opt for some dried fruit, nuts, bars of chocolate or even overnight oats. A couple of cloth napkins to clean up is a good idea too. A car diffuser or air freshener would be good to have in handy. Inclusive of your regular charger, best have a durable and long-lasting portable charger with you. You never know when you’d need to jump into a zoom call or chat while on the road and you don’t want your battery on low before you reach your destination. Carry your headphones or earplugs in the same pack. Embarking on a solo trip could mean having to perhaps prop your phone on a mount, in case you need to switch your GPS on. Phone mounts are usually adjustable and fit all types and sizes of phones.

Music can sometimes play a huge role when it comes to a road trip. While some of you may like the quiet or even roll the window down to enjoy the fresh air, others might need a good playlist whether you are traveling alone or with extra passengers. A neck pillow could provide some added comfort while driving for some hours or even if you plan to stop for a quick catnap along the way. Keep an emergency kit handy at the back of your car. Be sure to include a flashlight, some extra batteries, a blanket, first aid essentials, a tire pressure gauge and raincoat.

Sunglasses, lip balm, sanitizer and perhaps a hat are a given we think.
